Cigars & Spirits: Torano Cigars

Adrian Lesley checks out the new ranges from Nicaraguan cigar Czar Carlos Torano

The Torano family's credentials date from 1916 when they first began growing tobacco in Cuba. By the time of the Revolution in 1959 the Torano family owned and operated 17 Cuban farms, but following government nationalisation the family departed for the Dominican Republic and most recently Nicaragua and Honduras. For the past 25 years they have focused on producing cigars rather the growing tobacco. Earlier this year I reviewed the impressive Nicaraguan "Reserva del Presidente" Torpedo and I still have customers asking for more. Here we consider three new Torano robustos. Adrian Lesley is proprietor of CigarsUnlimited, south-west London's leading cigar specialist and a Habanos Gold Medal retailer. www.cigarsunlimited.co.uk +44 (0)20 7386 9000

Reserva Selecta Robustos
(129mm x 50 ring gauge) €10
The Reserva Selection comes individually framed in glass tubes with cedar sleeves. Double-banded, it is handmade in Honduras from tobaccos from Honduras, the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua. The near-perfect white ash and sweet aroma with hints of wood and spice will please those after a less-demanding smoke but may disappoint those seeking substance and character.

"Dominicos" Bundle Robusto
(120mm x 50 ring gauge) €7
At best the Dominico robusto is nothing more than an "everyday cigar" at an attractive price point. Fast burning and rather harsh to smoke, its overall construction is poor with a distinctly bitter aftertaste. With a typically Dominican flavour and mild to medium strength, it failed to impress despite its price. You get what you pay for with this cigar.

Reserva Casa Torano Robusto
(120mm x 50 ring gauge) €8
A well-made cigar that is value for money. This Robusto offers a mild daytime smoke with a pleasing aroma. With its Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Nicaraguan binder and filler from Honduras, Nicaragua and a "blend of Central and South American tobaccos", this is great for those wanting a respite from complex Cuban cigars. Ideal for beginners or occasional smokers.
