Sweet dreams

The 2007 Sauternes 'en primeur' tastings suggests this vintage could be on a par with some of the great vintages in recent memory, says Master of Wine Sam Harrop

Château Suduiraut 2007

Wow - what a nose! Dried apricots, ripe white peach, apple pie, and fresh cream, with a touch of mineral/lanolin quality thrown in for good measure. The palate has massive concentration and power, with a super natural acidity that not only supports the tremendous sweetness, but also helps carry these decadent flavours, ensuring a sensational finish. Put this one in the cellar for your grandchildren.

Château Doisy-Védrines 2007

An impressive wine with ample weight, concentration and sweetness. Pungent peach and nectarine is supported by a spicy, white floral perfume. These flavours are joined by baked apple and fennel notes on the palate and given an enhancing lift and zest by a firm acidity. A deceptively good wine that will take a number of years before it's into its stride. Consume within 15 years for maximum enjoyment.

Château Filhot 2007

On the bouquet, delicate rose petal, cherry blossom and freshly toasted rye aromas sit alongside an intense tropical fruit salad base. This is not your usual supercharged Sauternes style; it is a wine for wine enthusiasts looking for elegance, refinement and balance. A wine that offers exceptional value when compared to the more fêted estates, it can be enjoyed in youth, but has the pedigree to improve with another eight to 10 years in bottle.
