Luggage - Packing a Punch

Designers and manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of modern technology to woo today's demanding consumer.

Take the world's first "power-assisted" suitcase from Live Luggage which has a rechargeable battery pack supplying power to the wheels when the "anti-gravity" handle is gripped and the bag is tilted. "Being a travel warrior has never been easier," boasts Live Luggage – nor, possibly, as expensive. The case costs €900 for starters but weighs 10.6kg empty – precluding carry-on and quite possibly incurring excess baggage charges once packed. The cases are good for about 2.5km of assisted travel under a 32kg load – which should get you safely to a taxi-rank. www.liveluggage.com

The makers claim that the 'infrared' qualities of the Thermotex Platinum can heat muscle tissue deeper than conventional heat, and our limited test suggests that it's an excellent antidote to the sort of creaky back caused by long flights and driving. A useful adjunct to travel, and can be used when driving thanks to an adaptor. €200; www.steadfastcorp.com

So, what next – a bulletproof briefcase? Well, yes actually, and it's not just a James Bond fantasy. To celebrate its 110th anniversary, British luxury brand Globe-Trotter has launched what it claims is the world's lightest carry-on case (weighing just 1.35kg) made out of a fabric five times as strong as steel. Designer Ross Lovegrove (who designed the Walkmans for Sony) has created the Onehundred&ten Air Cabin using a weave of carbon fibre and kevlar. We don't understand why the handle scrapes your knuckles every time you use it though, and all said and done it'll only be as light as what you pack and still has no wheels. Then there's the super-heavy weight price of €1,900. Ouch. www.globe-trotterltd.com
