Rome and the Barbarians - Europe during the Migration Period

Invading hordes, imperial collapse and conspicuous display all star in this exciting presentation on the period 100-500 AD. Boasting a richly varied selection of weapons, luxurious status symbols and precious jewels, assembled from 70 European lenders, this is a momentous show.

Heartfelt Lines

The largest presentation of Van Gogh's oeuvre since the jubilee exhibition in Amsterdam in 1990 assembles 50 paintings and 100 watercolours and drawings from 60 lenders across the world.

Absolute. Abstract. Retrospective.
Munich, Germany, Lenbachhaus
From 25 October to 22 February 2009

If you're not in Munich for the beer-swigging Oktoberfest, head for the Lenbachhaus to see an exhibition dedicated to the founder of abstract painting - Wassily Kandinsky. Ninety of Kandinsky's pieces are on show as a result of this unprecedented collaboration between the Lenbachhaus, the Guggenheim Museum and the Centre Pompidou.

Stars, international filmmakers and industry professionals descend on London for this eagerly anticipated two week showcase of the best talent in contemporary world cinema. With public screenings of 180 feature films and 130 short films, the festival also hosts panel discussions, screen talks and live events.

The European Capital of Culture for 2008 celebrates the world renowned architect Le Corbusier, the so-called godfather of modern architecture. This is the first major UK exhibition of Le Corbusier's work in 20 years and showcases his unique, multi-disciplinary artistic vision.

Opera
Rigoletto
Paris, France
Opéra Bastille
Throughout October

This three act opera by Verdi, with the libretto by Franceso Maria Piave, (based on Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse) explores the tragic quest of the hunch-backed jester Rigoletto to protect his innocent daughter Gilda. Probably the best opera this month.
