PARK HYATT

Beijing

Location The top floors of the Beijing Yintai Centre – the tallest building on prestigious Chang’an Avenue – opposite the China World Trade Centre, the new CCTV Tower and what remains of the Mandarin Oriental hotel, which caught fire after CCTV staged a fireworks display last year. The Forbidden City and Summer Palace are a short cab ride away; the airport is a 40-minute, 100 yuan (€11) cab ride.

Style The hotel is a temple of sleek and contemporary design, inspired by classical Suzhou architecture and water gardens. The entrance is somewhat of a wind tunnel, which feels cold and unwelcoming, though guests are soon swept to the 63rd-floor reception area. There are several sexy bars and restaurants in the hotel complex: The Private Room, comprises 16 individually designed Cantonese dining suites where Beijing’s elite entertains; IFW (International Food Warehouse) has an industrial, wholesale food market vibe; and Xiu, is a sprawling indoor/outdoor zone of bars and lounges with live music. The most visually spectacular, though, is undoubtedly the China Grill on the 66th floor. It’s officially the highest (and hottest) restaurant in the city and topped by a soaring glass pyramid. The live jazz and food is well executed, but it’s really about the location.

Guestrooms As you’d expect from a new Park Hyatt, rooms are expertly designed complete with all technical gadgetry. What we hadn’t anticipated was the high-tech TOTO toilet, which has a lid that open and closes automatically, a heated seat and a personal cleansing system with military precision aim. Bathrooms feature oversized rain showers and huge stone baths, complete with touch-button mood lighting. There’s a DVD player in each room and the concierge holds a decent selection of movies. With the building boasting 360˚ views, few rooms are bad but west-facing ones get you views of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.

Can I work here? Each room has a proper desk and high-speed Wi-Fi, though they do charge. There’s an in-room selection of teas plus a Nespresso machine. If you are jetlagged, overworked or stressed, there is a truly superb gym and spa to make your stay even more relaxing.
